TLDR
D-Sector is the obvious choice for first-time visitors: walkable, central, and full of mid-range hotels. C-Sector is quieter and has the better views. Naharlagun is only worth staying in if you have an early train. Budget around 1,500 to 3,500 rupees a night for a comfortable double room anywhere in the city.
Insider Tip
Pick a hotel with a dedicated 6am breakfast option. Most Itānagar day trips leave before 7am and restaurants that are not attached to hotels are still closed at that hour.
Staying in D-Sector: Central and Convenient
D-Sector is where the majority of Itānagar’s hotel rooms are, and it is the default area for first-time visitors. The main road through the sector runs between the Assembly complex and Ganga Market and is lined with small-to-mid-sized hotels covering the 1,500 to 3,000 rupee range.

Pros: walking distance to markets, restaurants, and the state museum. Cons: noisier than other areas, and the busiest stretch of the main road is not the most pleasant for an evening walk. Pick a hotel set back one block and you will solve most of the noise issue.

Staying in C-Sector: Quiet and Elevated
C-Sector sits slightly higher up the ridge and has the best concentration of mid-range hotels in the 2,000 to 4,000 rupee range. The neighbourhood is residential, the streets are wider, and the views across the Papum Poma valley are the best you will get without leaving the city.

This is the best choice for anyone staying more than two or three nights or looking for a quieter base. Walking distance to Ganga Market is about ten minutes; to the Itafort ruins it is fifteen.
“I had a wonderful stay at Pybss Hotel. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well maintained, and the overall ambience was pleasant and relaxing. The service truly stood out, staff were polite, responsive, and always ready to help. A special mention to Mr. Tilak, the manager, for his excellent hospitality and professionalism. Highly recommended.”

Naharlagun hotels are mostly business-class properties aimed at railway passengers and government contractors. Rooms are fine but the area is much less interesting than central Itānagar, and the 15km commute into town each morning gets old quickly.

The one genuine reason to stay here is an early or late train. If the Donyi Polo Express arrives at 1am and leaves at 6am, a room within walking distance of the platform is worth more than the slightly nicer room you could have in D-Sector.
What to Look For in a Hotel
Four things separate a good Itānagar hotel from an average one. First, a restaurant that serves breakfast before 7am; this matters more than you think because most day trips leave early. Second, reliable hot water; some older properties have electric geysers that take 20 minutes to warm up. Third, wifi that actually works in the rooms rather than only in the lobby. Fourth, front-desk staff who can arrange permits, Sumo seats, and taxi pickups without a three-hour delay.
Most mid-range properties in the 2,000 to 3,500 rupee range check all four boxes. Below 1,500 rupees, expect to compromise on at least one; above 4,000 rupees, you are paying for room size and interior finish more than for useful services.
Homestays and Longer Stays
Homestays have grown in the last few years and are often the best way to spend a longer time in Itānagar. Expect 1,200 to 2,500 rupees a night for a clean private room with breakfast; dinner is usually available on request. The Arunachal tourism department maintains a list of approved homestays on arunachaltourism.com.
For stays over a week, a few of the mid-range hotels offer a weekly rate that works out roughly 25 percent below the nightly price. Ask directly at reception; the rate is rarely advertised online.
Booking Through Agencies vs Direct
Booking.com, Agoda, and MakeMyTrip all cover the larger Itānagar hotels and usually give the best price transparency. Smaller properties and homestays often only accept direct WhatsApp bookings; the hotel front desk can put you through.
Cancellation policies are generally flexible if you book direct and reasonably strict on third-party platforms. For a fully refundable booking, direct is worth the slight extra effort.
Practical Tips for Booking
Book at least two weeks ahead for the October-to-February peak season, and a month ahead if you want to coincide with Nyokum or Losar. In shoulder season (March-April and October) you can often get same-day rates. Monsoon (June-September) is the cheapest period; most properties offer 20 to 30 percent off their advertised rates and the city is genuinely pleasant to spend a quiet week in.
If you have any doubt about a property, ask to see the room before you check in. It is a completely normal request in Itānagar and no hotel will take it badly.
