TLDR
Itānagar is easier to reach than it used to be. The new Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi (IXV) opened in 2022 and sits 15km from the city. Failing that, the old Guwahati-via-Naharlagun route still works and takes about seven hours door to door. Shared Sumos handle almost every other route into town.
Insider Tip
If you land in Guwahati rather than Hollongi, book an overnight in Tezpur and finish the drive to Itānagar in the morning. The road after dark is narrow and genuinely unpleasant.
Flying In: Donyi Polo Airport (IXV)
Hollongi’s Donyi Polo Airport is the easiest way to reach Itānagar. It opened in November 2022 and now handles daily IndiGo flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Mumbai. The terminal is small and efficient, with no queues to speak of, and the drive from the airport into central Itānagar takes about 35 minutes on the new four-lane road.

Taxis at the airport are pre-paid; the counter is immediately outside arrivals and fares are fixed at 900 rupees to the city centre. App-based rides do not yet work reliably this far east, so the pre-paid option is the sensible default. Your hotel can usually send a car for roughly the same price if you arrange it the day before.

The Guwahati Route (Backup Option)
If you cannot get a Hollongi flight, flying into Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) is the standard alternative. From Guwahati, it is a 380km drive to Itānagar that takes about seven hours on a good day. Most visitors break the journey in Tezpur, which has several clean mid-range hotels and is the halfway mark.

Shared Sumos run the Guwahati-Itānagar route daily, usually departing Paltan Bazaar in Guwahati at 6am. Cost is around 800 rupees per seat; booking ahead via the operator’s WhatsApp is strongly recommended because seats sell out.
“I had a wonderful stay at Pybss Hotel. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well maintained, and the overall ambience was pleasant and relaxing. The service truly stood out, staff were polite, responsive, and always ready to help. A special mention to Mr. Tilak, the manager, for his excellent hospitality and professionalism. Highly recommended.”

Naharlagun railway station is technically Itānagar’s closest railhead, about 15km north of the city. The Donyi Polo Express runs three days a week from New Delhi and arrives in Naharlagun after roughly 32 hours; it is a long trip but a useful one if you are afraid of flying or want to see the terrain on the way in.

Local shared autos meet every incoming train and run a fixed fare of 80 rupees to central Itānagar. Allow 45 minutes for the drive, longer during the morning office rush. For train schedules and bookings, the Indian Railway official site (irctc.co.in) is the authoritative source.
Inner Line Permits
Anyone who is not a resident of Arunachal Pradesh, including Indian nationals, needs an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter the state. The online system at arunachalilp.com processes most applications in 24 hours and costs 100 rupees for Indians or 400 rupees for foreigners. Print two copies: one for the airport or railway checkpoint, and one for your hotel’s records.
If you have forgotten to apply in advance, there is an on-arrival counter at Hollongi airport that can process a permit in about an hour. It is a minor hassle to avoid by doing the online application a few days before you fly.
Getting Around Itānagar
The city itself is small and split into three working areas: Itānagar proper, Naharlagun, and the administrative complex in between. Shared autos cover the main routes at 20 to 40 rupees a ride. Private autos can be flagged down anywhere; expect to pay around 150 rupees for a cross-city hop.
Taxis are easy to arrange through your hotel but are overkill for short trips. For day trips out of the city, the shared Sumo stand in Naharlagun is the default starting point. Destinations, departure times, and fares are usually chalked on a board outside the booking office.
Arriving at Night
Most flights into Hollongi arrive in the late afternoon, but if you do end up arriving after dark the airport taxi rank runs until the last flight. The road into Itānagar is well-lit as far as Naharlagun and then becomes less so; still manageable, but not the moment to try driving yourself. Hotel pickups include a driver who knows the route blindfolded, which is the right choice for a night arrival.
